Born in 2008 from the mind of Swedish artist Thomas Martin Ekelund, Trepaneringsritualen is a project rooted in the dark realms of industrial and dark ambient music, moving decisively toward dense, ritualistic, and highly evocative soundscapes.
The very name, which references the ancient surgical procedure of trepanation—the act of creating a hole in the skull—already suggests a journey into the depths of the psyche, through mysticism, pain, and transformation. It is no coincidence that critics have described Trepaneringsritualen’s work in almost sacred terms: Pitchfork spoke of “heavy ritual ambient” with “an almost psychedelic quality,” while Orlando Weekly called it “an immersive experience with few equals in the world of experimental music, a pagan assault on all the senses.”
At the core of Ekelund’s artistic vision is a strong ideological and anarchic drive. Among his main influences, he cites the English punk collective Crass, from whom he learned not only the importance of irreverence as an artistic language but also the understanding that music can exist beyond traditional guitar, bass, and drums. With Trepaneringsritualen, Ekelund shapes a sonic universe that is more ritual than performance, more invocation than simple composition.
